Females are three times more vulnerable to depression than men. What is the reason for this difference? There are two primary causes for depression in women. At the tender age, boys learn that they have to be self-dependent. But girls should be dependent and brought up in a non-creative environment. Causes of Depression in Women

Mental Changes During Pregnancy

Depression of Being First-Time Mother: Immediately after giving birth, some mothers say that they do not want to go their baby. Such conditions can last for up to three days. This is a normal case, and it is acuter if the woman who gave birth, it is her first time.

This form of depression usually starts from the 3rd day of birth of her baby. This can last up to eleven to twelve weeks. Sometimes it takes a month for this depression to occur. 

Postpartum Depression: During pregnancy, sometimes pregnant mothers are more immune to indiscipline and depression.  Instead of keeping calm and peaceful they rather act more agitated and irritated. This is what we call postpartum depression.

Some mothers cannot sleep during pregnancy. They also lose their appetites. They get excited and start acting weird to such an extent, that they need medical attention.

  • If you have a previous history of depression (especially postpartum   depression)
  • Not receiving the required mental and financial support from your husband
  • If you deliver an immature or sick baby
  • Other related forms of depression. These may be like being ignored, or losing your job, you lose your house or financial problems)
  • If you are such a mother who at a tender age have lost your mother

For First Time Mothers

Reduce your target/goals. When you have a new baby you cannot do whatever you want. Your most important goal should be to create a beautiful environment for your baby in your house.

  • Keep everything in your house as calm as possible. In the first six months of your child’s life, do not change your lifestyle, in other words, stay at home.
  • Always stay near your child. Keep in touch with your friends. If required do not hesitate to ask for their help.
  • Distribute or share your duties and responsibilities with your husband. A child’s upbringing and day to day care are not only the duty of the mother only. It is, in fact, it is the dual responsibility of both the mother and the father.
  • Keep in touch with your family doctor or mid-wife as much as possible.
  • Take good care of your own health. 
  • If you get the chance to get some shut eye then do so. 
  • Most of all try to enjoy yourself as much as possible and stay with your child at all times as close as possible.
  •  If any help is necessary, then go ahead and help.

For Husbands And Friends

  • Tell the patient in a confident way that such feelings are normal;
  • Be patient. Do not forget that a child’s mother is going through some deep and dangerous changes in her mind and body. It is quite difficult for her to get out from. 
  • Try to realize that she is not focused on her social and sexual duties. Remember these are all symptoms of depression, never take them personally
  • Help her out as much as possible in all her work or activities
  • Get used to her changing behavior and her faults or failures
  • If she feels something which is giving her pain, then show her a way out of  the problem
  • Always no matter what, stay by her side at all times, if possible

Depression In Young Teens And Children

In the last 10 years, suicide in young teens has increased by more than 20%. Nowadays boys and girls between 15-19 years of age have a higher rate of deaths. This rate is higher than those deaths caused by heart attacks and cancer. In a recent study, it observed that more than 20% of young boys and girls are going through depression. Children before they reach the age of 15 have a rate of 7-15% of falling into depression. Even after knowing all this , we tend to ignore their symptoms of depression.

Why are the signs of depression of young teens and children ignored? Many times we tend to ignore the depression of young teens and children. The reasons for this type of depression is given below-

  • Young teens cannot express themselves as well as adults can
  • Most people think that young children and teens do not have any form of mental depression. 
  • While you are growing up, both your mental and physical conditions go through changes. 
  • These changes sometimes cause young children and teens to rebel against their parents’ wishes. 
  • Sometimes we tend to ignore the symptoms of such depression. 
  • Young children or teens do not have the ability to share their feeling the same way as adults have. So it becomes difficult for the doctors to diagnose.

To determine whether a teen is suffering from depression, we have to pinpoint their problems. For example, a young teen will be wearing black dresses to show that she is sad. By listening to music the young teen is trying to forget an incident in his or her life. 

It is not always the case that a boy or a girl wearing black or listening to music is going through depression.  Many teens and children like the color black and they wear it. Teens who are suffering from depression of tend to lose creativity and motivational strength. 

They separate from existing friends, sleep during the day, even after sleeping all night.  Sudden changes in their report cards of their schools. They start to lose their appetites and also start abusing alcohol. Even tender age children can have depression. In these cases, they tend to remain always in a crying mood. Reasons For Committing Suicide In Young

Every time a young teen tries to commit suicide, it does not mean that he or she is suffering from depression. But when the young teen is suffering from depression the risk for suicide is high. As observed the tendency to commit suicide is between  13-19 years of age.  

This tendency is due to family problems, arguments between the parents. It can also happen due to physical or sexual abuse. Teens with depression have a habit of getting into arguments with their boy or girlfriends. they also get into arguments with their classmates. 

In these cases, it is important to keep an eye on the person. The reason may be not important for us, but to a teenager, it is of big importance.

For example, rejection by friends and getting detached from existing friends is the cause of depression. The first signs are that of personality changes and come away from the society as a whole.

A study conducted recently in England, Colombia and Canada for children in grade 4. Approximately 20% of the girls and 14% of the boys did consider suicide in the past year.

Women Depression

Studies have shown that 25-30% same age young people of the same age try to commit suicide. It is also observed that only in Canada 62.5 % male of different ages have tried to commit suicide.

Teens do not commit during the time of depression. But they rather commit suicide after the depression has gone. This is so difficult to judge. 

The reason is that during the depression period they might not have the strength to do so.

But when they recover or on the way to recovery, it is in this time they try to commit suicide.

If someone talks about suicide, then we should pay attention. More than 70% of teenagers who have taken a decision to commit make sure to carry out their mission.


Boys who are suffering from depression usually get better results from counseling. The counselor must be acceptable to both patients’ and his or her parents and close ones. We hope it is the best method of counseling to teenagers.
